How to Reach

Since it is at one of the border areas, it is a little difficult to reach Spiti Valley directly by flight or train. The nearest airport is at a distance of 260 kilometers, the Kullu Manali Airport whereas the Joginder Nagar Railway Station, at a distance of 360 kilometers is closest to Spiti Valley and it will take approximately 8 hours by road to make it to your destination. Depending upon the areas you wish to explore, there are two routes to arrive at Spiti Valley. The Manali route via Rohtang Pass is scenic but mostly closed during the winter season due to heavy snowfall. However, the Shimla-Kinnaur Highway (NH05) is accessible anytime of the year and the journey is interspersed with picturesque visuals.

 

Best time 

End September to middle of November is the ideal time frame to explore the beauty of the Spiti Valley to the fullest. With clear skies and pleasant temperatures, it becomes easier to be in the mountains. During the summer months, the snow accumulated during winter remains in many areas and thus, it is not possible to travel to these locations. The monsoon and winter months are unpredictable and due to inclement weather is is best to not take a risk and visit Spiti Valley when the situation becomes better and landslides do not take place.

 

Three Legs of the Journey

The first stop is at the quaint village of Kalpa which is known for its vibrant apple orchards. On the way, you will be accompanied by the colossal hills and arrive at the picturesque location called Narkanda from where you can get a glimpse of the Hatu Peak. As you make your way further along the banks of the River Sutlej, you will reach Jeori, a place famous for hot springs with healing powers. Once you cross the Kinnaur gate and the grand rock tunnel, you will reach the Kinnaur region known for the lush Chilgoza Forests and majestic views of the Kinner Kailash Range.

 

During the second Leg of the journey, you will be introduced to the rich Tibetan culture of the place when you visit multiple monasteries along the way. Starting with the Tabo Monastery, also called the Ajanta of the Himalayas, and the Nako Monastery with a scenic lake in the front, the sheer beauty leaves every visitor awestruck. Moving ahead, you will be coming across the Dhankar Monastery, situated at the meeting Junction of Spiti and Pin rivers, which signifies your entry to the Pin Valley.

 

For the third Leg of your journey, you will be making your way through the Pin Valley to reach Kaza and the village of Gete, one of the highest habitable locations in Asia. This place is perfect for adventure enthusiasts who enjoy trekking. The next day, post a letter from the iconic post office bear Hikkim and capture stunning images of the Chau Chau Kang Nilda Peak from Langza and Komic.  After crossing the Chicham Bridge, arrive at Kibber Village and visit the Key Monastery for a spiritual experience. On the last day in Spiti Valley, camp near the turquoise waters of Chandratal Lake and head back to Shimla the next morning.

 

Tourist Activities in Shimla

Bring out the inner child in you as you board the toy train that will give you a tour of the picturesque hill station of Shimla. If you are interested in golf or racing, visit Annaandale, a place built by the Britishers for their recreation. Surrounded by the verdant alpine forests and the wildflowers, the roaring Chadwick Falls must feature on your bucket list. If you are travelling during winters and are in mood for some adventure, head over to Kufri and experience the thrill of skiing and ice skating. For souvenirs, you must carry a huge shopping bag  to Lakkar Bazaar for wooden handicrafts and the Mall Road. Make sure to visit the famous Trishool Bakers for their baked goodness and indulge in the local cuisine to your heart’s content.
