STROLL OLD SACRAMENTO
A significant portion of Old Sacramento is designated as a State Historic Park and a National Historic Landmark District. It oozes history everywhere you look, yet it also has a lot of charm! Many Gold Rush-era buildings have been restored or reconstructed here. Although there had been a settlement in the vicinity before 1839, Sacramento was during the 1848 Gold Rush. The facades are gorgeous, so take plenty of shots! We’ve selected some of the park’s activities because there are so many.

CALIFORNIA STATE RAILROAD MUSEUM
The California State Railroad Museum is a museum that is attractive not to railroad enthusiasts but to all lovers of history. It examines the importance of the railroad on the growth of the United States’ west coast. The museum is located in the Old Sacramento State Historic Park and constitutes one of Sacramento’s greatest sights. The museum’s exhibit space is 250,000 square feet! It owns nineteen steam locomotives that date from 1862 to 1944. Not all of them are on show at any given moment, but you may view a nice selection. The toy train museum, which includes hundreds of vintage trains and a working demonstration, is also a must-see.

RIVER EXCURSION TRAIN RIDE
The Sacramento Southern Railroad’s 50-minute round-trip train ride follows the Sacramento River. For a taste of what a train ride was like all those years ago, the cars are pushed by a steam or diesel locomotive. Each voyage includes a coach, open air, and one of three air-conditioned first-class cars. Refreshments are with first-class rides. During the summer, excursions are on weekends, with many departures on each weekend day.

STATE CAPITOL MUSEUM
The Mathews Murals, a set of twelve murals illustrating various stages in the state’s history, may be on the lower level. The Lucile Lloyd Mural in the John L. Burton Hearing Room is a three-panelled work of art depicting the evolution of the state’s name. The colors and details are stunning! Each of California’s 58 counties is with exhibits in a hallway.

STATE CAPITOL PARK
The grounds of the California State Capitol are worth exploring even if you do not go inside. Capitol Park is 40 acres in size and features trees and plants from all around the world.

When the blooms are in bloom, the International World Peace Rose Garden makes for a lovely stroll. Roses have a long bloom season in California, so there will be color for the majority of the year.

SACRAMENTO RIVER CRUISE
A Sacramento River cruise is one of the most soothing things to do in Sacramento. Several firms provide cruises ranging in length from 60 to 120 minutes. The cruises are usually narrated, and you’ll get to see the historic buildings of Old Sacramento as well as birds and wildlife. Some cruises also include culinary and wine experiences.

ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARKS
If you prefer looking at buildings as you stroll, Sacramento has plenty to offer. The 10-story Ziggurat skyscraper, fashioned like a pyramid, is near Old Sacramento. The architect was Mesopotamian ziggurats. The structure is beside the Sacramento River, which reflects on a clear day. And it’s stunning both inside and out. The Renaissance Revival structure is at 11th and K Streets in downtown Sacramento.
